Kayaking Video of Dan

Here's a short video edited by Max Jones, one of Dan's best friends in Asheville. Dan loved to kayak along with Sean, James K, James Wood, Tyler, Svend, Billy, Jeff, Mitchell, myself and many others. It is interesting that he never mentioned his kayaking to his Chemistry peers at Berkeley. He was tenacious, fearless and got so much enjoyment out of the sport. I hope he knew that I was always so proud of his whitewater exploits...

Dan could really dance in his kayak.... Very beautiful to watch.
We're all thinking of you and the family here in New York. My whole family sends their love.

What a great video of Dan. So fearless! He will definitely be missed and you, Aunt Dayna, and Uncle Peter are in all of our thoughts!

Many of you out there in the digital community don't know about an event called Jerry's Baddle-you can check out jerrysbaddle.org for details. The event, in its third year, is held in honor of another fallen kayaker on the Green River near Asheville and took place the Saturday after Dan's passing. Dan and I paddled the Green many times as he taught me to kayak on the easier lower section. The event this year carried double significance for me as I thought back over the times we had passed the very spot where the event took place. Over the years Dan and I paddled there and other places, most recently on the Dowd Chutes in Colorado, on our wild west road trip. From the video it is easy to see that Dan felt the most at ease and at peace on the water. If I had to guess where Dan is right now, I would imagine it is something like the Maury, the Cranberry, the Gauley, the Nolichucky and, of course, the Green, all mixed together, complete with piped in jazz music.
